Hyundai Motor India has introduced a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership model for the Creta Electric, becoming the latest carmaker in India to separate the cost of the battery from the vehicle. The move brings down the electric SUV's starting price to Rs 10.99 lakh (ex-showroom), while the battery can be paid for separately through a usage-based subscription plan with EMIs starting from Rs 3.9 per kilometre.

The new ownership model is aimed at addressing one of the biggest hurdles to EV adoption in India, the high upfront purchase cost. By removing the battery cost from the initial invoice, Hyundai hopes to make the Creta Electric accessible to a larger pool of buyers while offering greater flexibility in ownership.

New ownership model, lower upfront cost

Under the Battery-as-a-Service programme, customers purchase the vehicle while paying separately for the battery through a rental plan. This significantly reduces the acquisition cost compared to buying the vehicle and battery together.

The announcement comes as automakers continue exploring new ownership models to encourage EV adoption, particularly in the mass-market segment where purchase price remains a major deciding factor. Without BaaS, the Creta range starts at Rs 18.03 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 24.70 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hyundai adds new features

Alongside the introduction of BaaS, Hyundai has also updated the Creta Electric with a few customer-focused enhancements. The SUV now comes with an integrated side foot step, improving ease of entry and exit while lending it a more rugged SUV stance.

The company has also revised the home charging package. Variants equipped with the Home Charger (HC) option will now be supplied with a 7.4kW wall box charger, offering a more convenient and faster home charging solution.

No mechanical changes

The Creta Electric remains mechanically unchanged and continues to be offered with two battery pack options. The standard 42kWh battery delivers a claimed ARAI-certified range of 420km, while the larger 51.4kWh battery offers up to 510km on a full charge.

Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor. The 42kWh version produces 135bhp, while the long-range model develops 171bhp and is capable of accelerating from 0-100kmph in a claimed 7.9 seconds. Hyundai also claims the SUV can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 39 minutes using a DC fast charger.

Feature list remains unchanged

Apart from the newly added side foot step, the Creta Electric continues to offer a comprehensive feature list. It is equipped with Hyundai SmartSense Level 2 ADAS, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, Single Pedal Drive (i-Pedal), Digital Key with smartphone and smartwatch compatibility, and Active Air Flaps that improve aerodynamics and help cool vehicle components. Hyundai also continues to offer an eight-year/1.6 lakh km warranty on the battery pack.

Hyundai continues expanding charging network

Hyundai says it is also strengthening its EV ecosystem alongside product expansion. The company currently has charging infrastructure across 183 locations, comprising 214 DC fast chargers and 399 charging points. Over the next seven years, it plans to expand this network to around 600 public fast-charging stations across India.

Additionally, the myHyundai app enables users to locate and access more than 10,000 compatible EV charging points nationwide, further improving the convenience of EV ownership.
