Kia has begun road-testing the next-generation Sonet in India, with heavily camouflaged prototypes recently spotted on public roads. The upcoming compact SUV is expected to arrive in the Indian market in 2027 and will bring significant changes in terms of design, platform, technology and cabin space.

Although most styling details remain concealed under camouflage, the test vehicle reveals several notable updates. Up front, the SUV appears to feature a redesigned lighting setup with vertically stacked headlamps and distinctive boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, drawing inspiration from Kia's larger global SUVs. The grille looks more compact than the current model's unit, while the front bumper is expected to receive a sharper, more upright design.

The side profile hints at a more muscular stance. Interestingly, the prototype rides on alloy wheels similar to those previously seen on the first-generation Seltos. Other visible elements include conventional pull-type door handles, roof rails, body cladding around the wheel arches and lower doors, as well as disc brakes at both the front and rear.

Inside, a glimpse through the windshield suggests the presence of a large curved display panel housing twin 12.3-inch screens, similar to the setup offered in the Syros. While interior details remain scarce, the cabin is expected to undergo a comprehensive redesign with improved technology and materials.

At the rear, the Sonet appears to get slimmer tail-lamps that mirror the signature shape of the front DRLs. A redesigned bumper is also evident, although camouflage prevents a clear view of the overall tailgate design.

One of the biggest changes underneath the skin will be the shift to Kia's newer K1 architecture, which also underpins the Syros. The upgraded platform is expected to allow for a longer wheelbase, helping address one of the current Sonet's biggest drawbacks — limited rear-seat space. The new platform could also help Kia target a higher level of crash safety, with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating likely on the agenda.

Feature additions are expected to include larger infotainment and instrument displays, while the possibility of introducing Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) remains open. Kia had previously removed the technology from the updated Syros lineup, making its inclusion on the next Sonet something to watch for.

Powertrain options are likely to be carried over from the existing model. These could include the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines, paired with a mix of manual and automatic gearbox choices.

Looking further ahead, Kia is also understood to be developing a strong-hybrid powertrain for the Sonet. The electrified variant is expected to join the range sometime after the launch of the new-generation model, potentially around 2028-29.

With a comprehensive redesign, additional technology and an upgraded platform, the next-generation Sonet is expected to command a premium over the current model.
