Tata retains second spot as Mahindra closes in, Maruti remains first in July sales
India's passenger vehicle market posted another strong month in June 2026, with Maruti Suzuki maintaining its lead, Tata Motors narrowly holding second over Mahindra, while Hyundai's volumes declined amid production disruptions.

The passenger vehicle market continued its growth trajectory in June 2026, with most manufacturers posting healthy gains. While Maruti Suzuki remained comfortably ahead of the competition, the battle for second place stayed intense, with Tata Motors narrowly edging out Mahindra once again. Hyundai was the only automaker among the top five to register a decline in domestic sales during the month.
Maruti Suzuki remains well ahead of rivals
Maruti Suzuki retained its undisputed leadership position, dispatching 1,47,187 passenger vehicles in the domestic market, marking a 23.78 percent year-on-year increase.
The company's SUV portfolio, comprising the Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Ertiga, XL6, Jimny, Invicto, Victoris and the recently launched e Vitara, contributed 61,726 units. Meanwhile, its compact and hatchback range, including the Alto, S-Presso, Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Swift and Wagon R, accounted for 75,231 units, continuing to form the backbone of Maruti's sales.
Tata stays ahead of Mahindra
Tata Motors retained second place with 62,076 domestic passenger vehicle sales, registering the highest year-on-year growth among major carmakers at 67.4 percent.
The margin over Mahindra, however, remained slim, with Tata finishing the month just 1,683 units ahead. June also proved eventful for the automaker as it launched the Sierra EV and announced a price hike of up to 1.5 percent across its internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle lineup, effective from July 1.
Mahindra continues strong SUV momentum
Mahindra remained within striking distance of Tata after recording 60,393 domestic SUV sales, reflecting a 27.66 percent year-on-year increase.
The company's consistent performance was backed by sustained demand for models such as the Scorpio-N, Thar, XUV 3XO and XUV 7XO, keeping it firmly in contention for the second spot.
Hyundai slips
Hyundai Motor India reported 39,635 domestic sales in June, representing a 9.97 percent year-on-year decline.
The company attributed the drop to a fire at one of its component suppliers' manufacturing facilities, which affected production and resulted in an estimated loss of around 13,900 units during the month. Despite the setback, the Creta, Venue and Exter continued to lead Hyundai's volumes, while the Grand i10 Nios and i20 maintained steady demand.
Toyota holds fifth place
Toyota Kirloskar Motor retained fifth position with 28,441 domestic sales, up 7.52 percent compared to the same month last year.
The Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Glanza remained the company's volume drivers. Toyota is also expected to expand its portfolio this month with the launch of the ninth-generation Hilux pickup in India.
Kia records healthy double-digit growth
Kia India closed June with 24,552 domestic dispatches, posting a 19.04 percent year-on-year increase.
The Seltos and Sonet continued to anchor sales, while the Carens Clavis and Syros added to overall volumes. During the month, Kia also rolled out its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) programme for the Carens Clavis EV, aimed at lowering the upfront ownership cost of its electric MPV.
Despite Tata Motors successfully defending its second-place position in June, the narrow gap to Mahindra suggests the contest is far from over. With new product launches, expanding EV portfolios and festive-season demand approaching, the rankings among India's leading passenger vehicle manufacturers could become even more closely contested in the coming months.
