Govt extends CBDT chairman Ravi Agrawal's term by six months

APPOINTMENT APPROVED BY CABINET COMMITTEE
Ravi Agrawal, a 1988-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, was due to retire on June 30, 2026.
According to a government circular dated June 30, 2026, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved his reappointment as CBDT Chairman on a contract basis for six months. The order said he would serve from July 1, 2026, till December 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The appointment will be on the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed Central Government officers. The government has also relaxed the Recruitment Rules for this reappointment.
Ravi Agrawal was appointed as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the policy-making body of the Income Tax Department, in June 2024 for a one-year term.
His tenure was extended by another year in June 2025. With the latest decision, he will now continue to lead the CBDT until the end of December 2026, unless further orders are issued.
