Congress MLA's son assaulted, arrested accused's family allege custodial torture
A scuffle involving the son of a Congress MLA outside the MLA Rest House in Bhopal has escalated into a controversy, with the accused's families alleging custodial torture and counter-assault.

Madhya Pradesh police have arrested four men for allegedly assaulting the son of a Congress MLA outside the MLA Rest House in Bhopal after he objected to their alleged liquor consumption in the area, officials said. The incident has since snowballed into a controversy, with the accused's families alleging custodial torture, one-sided police action and claiming that the youths were also assaulted.
According to police, Devraj Singh Gurjar, son of Morena Congress MLA Dinesh Gurjar, alleged that a group of youths consuming alcohol outside the MLA Rest House demanded money from him. When he refused, they allegedly assaulted him. His friends, who arrived at the spot, intervened and rescued him, while the accused allegedly fled after issuing death threats.
Based on Devraj's complaint, police registered an FIR against four accused -- Pankaj, Mayank, Sohan and Vicky -- and arrested them.
Police said the preliminary investigation supported the allegation that the accused were consuming alcohol and had demanded money from the complainant. Further investigation is underway.
However, the case has taken a fresh turn after the families of the accused claimed that their sons were also assaulted during the altercation and alleged that police acted solely on the complaint filed by the MLA's son.
They further accused police personnel of assaulting the youths inside the police station. Videos purportedly linked to the incident have surfaced on social media and police said they are verifying their authenticity.
"Since yesterday, the police have kept my children in the police station. They had only a minor scuffle with the MLA's son, but the police beat them brutally. Their bodies are covered with injury marks. We were not even being allowed to meet them at the police station," a relative of one of the accused said.
The incident has also raised questions over security at the MLA Rest House. Residents and visitors have reportedly complained on several occasions about late-night gatherings of people consuming alcohol and other anti-social elements in and around the premises.
The Bhopal Police Commissioner said all aspects of the case, including the allegations made by the accused's families and the viral videos, are being examined and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
