Two elderly women were found dead inside their home in Delhi's New Rajendra Nagar area on Thursday, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths, officials said.

After repeated attempts to contact the occupants failed, the gate was broken open, following which the bodies of the two women were found lying in separate parts of the house.

The two women have been identified as Saroj, 78, and Chandrakanta, around 80. Police said the two were related as sister-in-law and sister-in-law's elder relative, and lived alone at the house in the upscale Rajendra Nagar locality.

Officials said Chandrakanta was bedridden and unable to move without assistance, while Saroj also required support to walk and used to take care of her.

Police said no external injury marks were found on either of the bodies during the preliminary examination. There were also no signs of forced entry or evidence suggesting that someone had forcibly entered the house.

A forensic team is currently examining the spot, while the bodies have been sent for postmortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.
