Delhi's Raksha Bandhan gift, Rs 2,500 monthly aid to economically weaker women

Delhi is preparing to launch the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, which will provide eligible women Rs 2,500 a month through direct benefit transfer. The move is aimed at reaching 20 to 22 lakh women, with online registration and eligibility rules now in place.

The Delhi government is set to roll out the much-awaited Mahila Samriddhi Yojana on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, under which eligible women from economically weaker sections will receive Rs 2,500 every month through direct benefit transfer, sources said.

The scheme is expected to be formally launched on August 28, with the sources indicating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate it.

However, an official announcement regarding the launch is yet to be made.

Preparations for the scheme are said to be in the final stages. The online registration portal has been developed, eligibility criteria have been finalised, and the Delhi government has earmarked Rs 5,110 crore for the initiative in its 2026-27 Budget.

Officials estimate that 20 to 22 lakh women across the national capital are likely to benefit.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has previously said her government wants to implement the scheme only after completing all preparations to ensure that every eligible beneficiary can access the financial assistance without procedural hurdles.

According to the proposed eligibility norms, applicants must be permanent residents of Delhi, aged between 21 and 60 years, with an annual family income between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh.

Women holding ration cards are expected to receive priority during enrolment.

The scheme will exclude women employed in government jobs, tax payers, recipients of government pensions and those who own four-wheelers.

Registration will be conducted entirely online. Applicants will have to submit details including their Aadhaar number, Aadhaar-linked bank account, mobile number, date of birth, marital status, proof of residence and a self-declaration form.
