17 Delhi Metro stations to remain closed today as CJP protest continues
Delhi Metro will shut 17 stations in central Delhi from Friday morning because of security advisories linked to the CJP protest at Jantar Mantar. The move extends a second day of disruption and is expected to hit commuters as demonstrations continue in the capital.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Thursday announced that 17 metro stations across central Delhi will remain closed from 7:30 am on Friday until further notice following security advisories issued in view of the ongoing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar.
The closure comes a day after metro services were disrupted for nearly eight hours as authorities tightened security in the national capital amid the student-led agitation over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, including the NEET paper leak. The CJP has been staging an indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar demanding accountability over the alleged exam irregularities and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, among other demands.
In a post on X, the DMRC said the affected stations will remain closed from 7:30 am on July 24 until further instructions. However, interchange facilities will continue to be available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat stations.
The stations that will remain closed are Lok Kalyan Marg, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhambha Road, Supreme Court, Seva Teerth, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market, Jor Bagh, Shivaji Stadium and Jhandewalan.
TRAFFIC REMAINED AFFECTED ON THURSDAY
Traffic across central Delhi remained severely affected on Thursday as heightened security arrangements around the protest, coupled with the Metro station closures, disrupted both road and rail travel for a second consecutive day. Many office-goers and students were forced to take longer and more expensive routes after key roads were barricaded, while public transport witnessed increased pressure due to the restrictions.
The disruption also spilled over to commercial activity in Connaught Place, one of the capital's busiest business districts. Delhi Police advised people to avoid unnecessary travel to the New Delhi area, while traders in Connaught Place were asked to shut shops, offices and restaurants by 6:30 pm as a precautionary measure.
Security has been heightened across central Delhi following clashes during the CJP's earlier 'Sansad Chalo' march, after which police imposed restrictions around key government installations and intensified security arrangements in the area.
