A dermatologist has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 45-year-old domestic help with a baseball bat and a knife, claiming she was practising black magic and spreading negative energy, at his residence in South Delhi's upscale Kailash Hills area, police said.

The accused, Manish Gupta, an MBBS doctor specialising in dermatology, allegedly attacked the victim, Meena, first with a baseball bat and then stabbed her multiple times with a knife, resulting in her death on the spot.

According to police, a PCR call was received at around 11.30 am reporting that a woman was lying in a pool of blood on the terrace of a house in the Amar Colony police station area. A police team rushed to the spot and found Meena's body on the rooftop. Gupta was present near the body when officers arrived.

Police recovered a baseball bat and a knife from the scene, both believed to have been used in the crime. The accused was immediately taken into custody and later arrested.

During interrogation, Gupta allegedly confessed to the murder. However, investigators said the motive behind the killing remains unclear and is being examined from multiple angles, saying that there was no evidence to support claims of black magic or "negative energy".

Initially, Gupta told police that Meena had been practising black magic and that her actions had disturbed the peace of the household and caused distress to family members. Investigators, however, said no evidence has so far emerged to support the allegation.

Police sources said Gupta has been suffering from depression for a considerable period and has been giving varying statements during questioning. Investigators are examining whether his mental health condition played any role in the crime.

According to preliminary findings, Gupta had allegedly wanted to remove Meena from his household for the past two to three years. Sources said his wife, who is also a doctor, was opposed to dismissing the domestic help, leading to frequent disagreements within the family. Police are probing whether these tensions may have contributed to the incident.

Officials said Gupta's wife was not at home at the time of the murder.

Meena had reportedly been working at the household for more than a decade. News of her death triggered outrage among her family members and relatives, who gathered outside the doctor's residence. Police personnel were deployed to control the situation and maintain order.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said the exact motive behind the murder has not yet been established and that investigators are verifying the accused's claims while examining all possible angles.

A forensic team inspected the crime scene and collected evidence. Police have registered an FIR, seized the weapons allegedly used in the crime, and are continuing their investigation.
