An elderly woman was killed in a road accident in Delhi on Saturday morning after a Mercedes-Benz collided with a WagonR, police said. The impact of the crash pushed the WagonR backwards into a stationary three-wheeler loading van, and the woman was caught between the vehicles and died on the spot.

Police said the Mercedes was being driven by a young man identified as Shubham. He was detained at the spot immediately after the accident.

Officials said Shubham’s father is a Sub-Inspector in the Haryana Police. Preliminary inquiry further revealed that the Mercedes did not belong to him and had been borrowed from a friend a day earlier.

According to the initial police inquiry, the Mercedes and the WagonR collided head-on. The force of the impact caused extensive damage to the front portions of both cars, while the three-wheeler loading van also suffered visible impact marks after being struck by the WagonR.

Visuals from the scene showed the Mercedes and WagonR standing damaged near the roadside, with crumpled body panels, broken parts and debris scattered around the point of impact.

Police personnel were seen inspecting the vehicles and documenting the scene as part of the investigation.

Residents living near the apartment complex said they heard a loud crash and rushed outside.

News agency ANI quoted one local resident as saying, “We heard a sudden bang and saw the vehicles badly damaged. The woman was trapped between them and people immediately called the police.” Another eyewitness said the collision was so severe that it pushed the smaller car backwards into the parked loading vehicle.

Several eyewitnesses also alleged that the Mercedes driver appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Police said a medical examination of the driver has been conducted and the final report is awaited.

Officials said the investigation would take into account the medical findings before reaching any conclusion on the allegation.

Police said the WagonR driver suffered minor injuries and was provided medical assistance. No other serious injuries were reported.

Officials clarified that the case is being treated as a fatal road accident and a case has been registered under the relevant legal provisions. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the collision, including the speed and movement of both vehicles.

Police said no crowding or law-and-order issue was reported at the spot and traffic movement was restored after the damaged vehicles were removed. Further investigation is in progress.
