A speeding car allegedly rammed into two men standing by the roadside in Gurugram's Sector 75, leaving both critically injured before the occupants fled the scene, police said on Saturday.
The injured men, including a graphic designer, were standing on the roadside when the speeding Baleno car struck them. The impact threw both men several metres away, leaving them with serious injuries. They were rushed to a hospital, where they remain in critical condition.
CCTV footage of the incident shows the two men standing by the road moments before the Baleno ploughed into them at high speed. According to the initial investigation and eyewitness accounts, the car was carrying three young men, all of whom fled immediately after the crash without stopping to help the injured.
Police said the vehicle bore a temporary registration number. Officials are using CCTV footage and the temporary registration details to identify and trace the accused.
Gurugram Police launched an investigation soon after receiving information about the incident. ACP Crime Naveen Sharma said the accused are being identified based on video evidence and the vehicle details, and efforts are underway to arrest them at the earliest.
The recent hit-and-run incident came days after a Gurugram man lost his life after a speeding Mahindra Thar hit his motorcycle from behind on Delhi's Rajokri flyover, just days before his 34th birthday.
The victim, identified as Sarthak Mattoo, was employed with a private event management company in Noida. The accident occurred on June 25 while he was travelling on his Pulsar motorcycle from Gurugram to Noida. According to police, the car had struck a motorcycle, leaving the rider critically injured. Sarthak was rushed to the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj by a PCR team, where doctors declared him brought dead.
During the investigation, police traced the alleged offending vehicle, a black Mahindra Thar bearing a Karnataka registration number. The SUV was found to be registered in the name of a Bengaluru-based private company and had been leased to Sagar Saha (29), a Bihar native employed with the company in Bengaluru.
Police said Sagar Saha told investigators that the vehicle was being driven at the time of the accident by his friend, Apurv Singh (30), a native of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh who works for a private firm and is currently residing in Gurugram. Saha was allegedly seated in the front passenger seat when the crash occurred.
The Thar was seized as part of the investigation, while Apurv Singh has been arrested. Police are also examining CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
