Food safety teams of the Cyberabad Commissionerate (CMC) detected multiple hygiene and food safety violations, including a cockroach infestation and the presence of pigeons in a raw material storage area, during an inspection at Bake Max Foods (Brown Bear Bakery) in Hyderabad's Kukatpally.
During the inspection, officials noted a few positive practices, including food handlers wearing aprons and hairnets and adherence to basic personal hygiene measures. However, inspectors also identified several serious violations that raised concerns about food safety.
According to officials, eggs used for baking were stored without being properly cleaned, creating a potential contamination risk. A cockroach infestation was observed within the premises, while pigeons were found in the raw material storage area, indicating poor pest-control measures.
The inspection team also found uneven and slippery flooring in the manufacturing unit and rusted baking trays being used for food preparation.
Further, officials observed that finished products did not carry mandatory manufacturing and expiry date labels, with only batch numbers being mentioned on the packaging, potentially affecting product traceability and consumer awareness.
Following the inspection, food samples were collected and sent for laboratory analysis. Authorities said a show-cause notice would be issued to the establishment, and directions were given to the management to improve hygiene standards, storage practices, pest-control measures and compliance with product-labelling requirements.
The bakery received a hygiene assessment score of 71 out of 92 (78%), placing it in the "Improvement Required" category under the department's rating system.
The inspection was carried out as part of the Cyberabad Commissionerate's ongoing food safety inspection drive aimed at ensuring compliance with hygiene and food safety standards across food establishments within the commissionerate's jurisdiction.
Cyberabad Commissionerate officials said regular inspections would continue across food establishments to strengthen food safety standards and safeguard public health. They urged food business operators to strictly comply with hygiene and food safety regulations to ensure the quality and safety of food served to consumers.
