A chain-snatching incident inside a cosmetic shop in broad daylight has raised fresh concerns over the safety of women wearing gold jewellery, even within commercial establishments, in Hyderabad.
The incident took place at a cosmetic store in Uppal on Thursday afternoon. According to police, a young man entered the shop posing as a customer and asked about the price of a face wash. When a female employee turned around to show him the product, he allegedly snatched the gold mangalsutra from her neck and attempted to flee.
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Kasula Sandhya, is a resident of Venkata Reddy Nagar. The stolen mangalsutra is said to weigh around 37 grams. The incident occurred at around 12.50 pm and was captured on the shop's CCTV cameras.
Several locals who witnessed the accused fleeing immediately chased him. They caught him and subsequently handed him over to the police. The accused, reportedly 21 years old, has been taken into custody and is being questioned.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage and other evidence related to the case.
