Officials said Govardhan and the woman had known each other while living in the same neighbourhood and were earlier in a relationship, which ended around a year ago. The woman has told officials that she had been facing repeated stalking and threats from the accused since the breakup.

According to police, the accused climbed onto the building from a neighbouring structure and gained access through the corridor before launching the attack inside the flat.

In the struggle that followed, the woman's parents, sister and uncle attempted to intervene but were also injured. Most of the family members suffered injuries to their hands while trying to fend off the attacker. The woman's mother sustained facial injuries and reportedly lost a tooth during the incident.

Neighbours, alerted by the family's cries for help, intervened, overpowered the accused and informed the police. Cops arrived at the spot and took Govardhan into custody. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, where their condition is stated to be stable.

Police are continuing their probe into allegations of stalking, harassment and threats made prior to the incident.
