A mason's life was allegedly snuffed out for a mere Rs 110 and a mobile phone in a brutal robbery-cum-murder that has sent shockwaves through Telangana’s Secunderabad. After days of investigation, Hyderabad police arrested two delivery workers accused of luring the migrant labourer to a deserted stretch of road and crushing his skull with stones before fleeing with the paltry loot.

The victim, 38-year-old Jai Prakash Deshmukh from Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district, had come to Hyderabad in search of work and was living from one construction site to another. On June 2, he travelled to Secunderabad to visit his brother in Miyapur. By the next morning, he was dead.

In the darkness before dawn on June 3, police received a distress call about a man lying motionless in a pool of blood near the bypass road between the Railway Bridge and Tukaramgate. What officers found at the scene was chilling. Deshmukh's body bore devastating head injuries, while two blood-soaked stones lay nearby, believed to have been used to repeatedly smash his head. A liquor bottle and a belt bag were found scattered near the crime scene.

For days, the victim remained unidentified. With no documents on him, police were left with only photographs of the deceased, which were circulated widely through social media and media networks. Three days later, a family hundreds of kilometres away in Madhya Pradesh saw the images and recognised the victim as their missing relative.

As investigators pieced together Deshmukh's final movements through CCTV footage, technical evidence and local intelligence, a grim picture emerged. Police say two delivery workers — Dhabee Vinod, a grocery delivery boy, and Makkala Mohan, a food delivery executive — had allegedly targeted the unsuspecting mason near Monda Market.

According to investigators, the duo offered him a ride, pretending they would drop him near Secunderabad Railway Station. Instead, they allegedly took him to a secluded area with robbery on their minds. When Deshmukh resisted, police say the attackers turned violent, raining blows with stones until he collapsed. They then abandoned him on the roadside and escaped with his belongings.

Ironically, all that the accused looted from the deceased was just Rs 110 in cash and a mobile phone.

The suspects were arrested on June 8, and police recovered the stolen phone along with the electric bike allegedly used in the crime. One of the accused, Vinod, is also reported to have a previous criminal record.
