A 21-year-old woman preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) died after falling from a height under suspicious circumstances in Indore on Thursday night, police said. The incident was captured on CCTV.
The NEET aspirant, identified as Avantika Maurya, was living at her elder sister’s place in the city while preparing for the medical entrance examination.
According to family members, the incident occurred around 11:30 pm. Avantika was reportedly speaking on her mobile phone while standing on the balcony of the four-storey home before moving to the upper level of the building. Shortly afterward, family members heard a loud sound and found her critically injured after the fall.
She was rushed to a private hospital and later referred to Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital for advanced treatment. She died during treatment early Friday morning.
Family members told police that Avantika was originally from Dhar district and had been staying in Indore with her elder sister, a doctor, to prepare for the NEET examination. Her father, who is also associated with the medical field and was undergoing training in Indore, was present at the flat when the incident occurred.
The student's brother told investigators that she had previously attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance. He also said she had recently expressed a desire to visit Tincha Falls, a popular scenic spot near Indore, but was not allowed to.
According to the family, Avantika had spoken with her elder sister on a video call shortly before the incident.
The student's brother, cousin and father have told police that she jumped from the building. However, authorities said they are investigating all aspects of the case.
Police are examining CCTV footage, the student's phone records and other evidence to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
