11 arrested for Kolkata protest violence, police say none were students
Kolkata Police arrested 11 people after violence broke out at a protest rally in central Kolkata. The probe is focusing on vandalism, attacks on journalists and the role of each accused.
Kolkata Police have arrested 11 people in connection with the violence that erupted during a protest rally in central Kolkata, saying none of the accused are students and alleging that they were involved in vandalism and attacks on journalists.

Among them was Md. Afroz, who was apprehended near Andal on the Durgapur Expressway while allegedly attempting to flee the state.
Another accused, Arshad Ali alias Sajid, was also arrested as the investigation gathered pace.
In a subsequent update, Kolkata Police confirmed that a total of 11 accused had been arrested in connection with the violence. According to police, two of the accused—Md. Azad and Md. Afroz—were intercepted near Andal on the Durgapur Expressway while allegedly trying to leave West Bengal.
"Total 11 accused arrested in connection with yesterday's violence and attacks on journalists. None of them is a student. They are all trouble mongers who were present at the CJP rally yesterday and engaged in vandalism," Kolkata Police said.

Left student organisations, along with supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), had organised the demonstration to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the dissolution of the National Testing Agency (NTA), and justice for students who allegedly faced police excesses during protests across the country.
The situation escalated after protesters blocked a key intersection in the city. According to police, demonstrators hurled stones and other objects at security personnel, prompting police to respond with baton charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Despite repeated attempts by police to clear the area, the agitation continued for several hours.
The clashes also resulted in alleged attacks on media personnel covering the protest, prompting Kolkata Police to launch a separate investigation into the incidents.
Police said efforts are underway to determine the role of each arrested individual in the violence, vandalism and attacks on journalists. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage and other evidence as part of the probe. Further arrests have not been ruled out as the investigation progresses.
