Influencer found dead 5 months after marriage, family alleges dowry harassment

Police have registered a dowry death case against a newlywed social media influencer's husband and five relatives after she was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Lucknow. Her family has alleged she was killed for dowry and her death passed off as a suicide.

A newlywed social media influencer was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her marital home in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow, prompting police to register a dowry death case against her husband and five of his family members. While her in-laws claimed she died by suicide, her family has alleged that she was murdered over dowry demands and that the scene was staged to appear as a suicide.

The victim's body was found hanging inside her home in Saadatganj area on Saturday. According to the complaint filed by the victim's family, she was married to Sagar Rajput, a social media influencer with nearly 7.93 lakh Instagram followers, on December 9, 2024.

The victim's uncle, Sunil Kumar Verma, a resident of Kanpur, alleged that the family had spent according to their means on the wedding and provided around Rs 7 lakh in cash along with gifts and household items.

However, the woman's relatives claimed that her husband and in-laws were dissatisfied with the dowry and began pressuring her for a car soon after the marriage.

The victim’s family has alleged that she was subjected to repeated physical and mental harassment by her husband Sagar, father-in-law Rajesh, sisters-in-law Barkha and Chandni, brother-in-law Anu and aunt-in-law Asha over the unmet demand.

Family members said the victim had informed them several times about the alleged harassment. They claimed to have intervened on multiple occasions in an attempt to resolve the dispute, but the alleged abuse continued.

The woman's family was informed of her death on Saturday through relatives. They have accused the in-laws of killing her and hanging the body to conceal the crime.

Saadatganj Inspector Santosh Arya said a case has been registered against six people, including the husband, under charges related to dowry death based on the family's complaint. Meanwhile, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and further action will be taken based on the autopsy report and forensic evidence. Police said the investigation is underway.
