Used car dealer in Mumbai dies after airbag deploys during vehicle inspection
A used car dealer in Mira Road died after a steering-wheel airbag allegedly deployed while he inspected a vehicle. Police are probing the car's condition, service history and possible defects to establish what triggered it.

A 25-year-old used car dealer died after suffering a fatal neck injury when a vehicle's steering-wheel airbag allegedly deployed unexpectedly while he was inspecting the car in Maharashtra's Mira Road, police said. The incident occurred on Thursday near Pleasant Park Society in the Kashimira area, prompting police to launch an investigation into the circumstances that led to the airbag deployment.
The deceased was identified as Mohit Suresh Soni, a resident of Tiara Hills Housing Society in Mira Road. According to police, Soni had stopped the vehicle by the roadside to inspect it before accepting it for sale as part of his business.
Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kamble of Kashimira Police Station said that while Soni was examining the vehicle, the steering-wheel airbag suddenly inflated. During deployment, the airbag cover allegedly struck the right side of his neck with significant force, causing a severe injury. The impact reportedly led to heavy bleeding, resulting in his death.
Local residents who witnessed the incident alerted the police, following which Soni was rushed to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital in Bhayander. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police have registered an accidental death case at Kashimira Police Station, while a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine what caused the airbag to deploy. Assistant Police Inspector Panmand is leading the probe.
According to officials, Soni's brother, Kuldip Soni, has requested a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact reason behind his brother's death.
POLICE TO CONDUCT A TECHNICAL EXAMINATION
As part of the inquiry, police will conduct a technical examination of the vehicle with the assistance of automobile experts. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has also been contacted to inspect the car and determine whether any mechanical defect or malfunction triggered the unexpected deployment of the airbag.
Investigators are also attempting to trace the vehicle's original owner to ascertain whether the car had been involved in any previous accidents or whether repairs or modifications had been carried out on the airbag system. Police said all aspects, including the vehicle's service history and safety mechanisms, are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
