A suspected secret marriage between a woman and her alleged lover has emerged as the latest twist in the murder of Pune-based realtor Ketan Agarwal, with investigators now examining whether the two had quietly tied the knot months before allegedly plotting his death.

Police said on Tuesday that chats recovered from the mobile phones of Siya Goyal, Agarwal's fiance, and her alleged lover, Chetan Chaudhary, suggest they may have secretly married before the killing. Investigators are now trying to verify whether such a marriage took place and, if it did, whether it was legally registered.

The development comes as police continue to unravel what they believe was a carefully planned conspiracy behind the death of 25-year-old Agarwal, who was allegedly pushed off a cliff at Lohagad Fort in Maharashtra's Pune district on June 18. Agarwal and Goyal were due to marry in November.

SECRET MARRIAGE CLAIM UNDER SCANNER

"Analysis of chats exchanged between Siya and Chetan indicates that they had secretly married. There are unconfirmed reports also about their marriage. We are verifying this claim and also checking whether the marriage was legally registered," a senior Pune Rural Police official told PTI.

Investigators are examining mobile phone data, chat records and other digital evidence recovered from the accused to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the murder.

According to police, Goyal, 20, and Chaudhary, 22, allegedly decided to eliminate Agarwal because he had become an obstacle to their relationship.

Investigators also claim the duo meticulously planned the murder and even rehearsed the act before allegedly executing it at the hill fort.

COURT SENDS ACCUSED TO JUDICIAL CUSTODY

The latest revelation comes days after a Pune court sent Goyal and Chaudhary to 14-day judicial custody in the murder case.

The two were produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class A M Vibhute after the expiry of their police custody. The prosecution sought a three-day extension of custody, arguing that mobile phone data recovered from the accused contained chats in signs and coded language, and that further custodial interrogation was required to decipher the conversations.

The defence opposed the plea, arguing that investigators had already been given sufficient time to probe the case and that no further custodial interrogation was necessary.

After hearing both sides, the court rejected the prosecution's request and remanded the accused to judicial custody till July 16.

Both Goyal and Chaudhary remain in judicial custody as investigators continue to examine digital evidence that could prove crucial in establishing the alleged conspiracy behind Agarwal's murder.
