An incident in Pune's Talegaon Dabhade has raised serious questions over the quality of development work after a powerful jet of water suddenly burst through the middle of an asphalt road. The incident triggered panic among residents, with many initially believing that the road had cracked open. The entire episode was captured on a nearby CCTV camera.

The incident is linked to a water supply project under which a new pipeline was laid beneath the road around one-and-a-half years ago. Authorities later resurfaced the road with asphalt. The new water supply scheme was scheduled to be inaugurated next week.

On Saturday, ahead of the inauguration, the municipal council began testing the pipeline by releasing water from the newly constructed water tank. Moments after the testing started, a massive fountain of water erupted from the middle of the road.

The subsequent investigation revealed a major construction lapse. Officials found that the contractor had failed to properly connect two sections of the pipeline while laying the network. As water pressure increased during the testing, the faulty joint gave way, causing the pipeline to separate and forcing water to burst through the road surface.

Taking note of the incident, Talegaon Municipal Council Chief Officer Girish Dapekar said the entire cost of repairing the pipeline and reconstructing the damaged road would be recovered from the contractor concerned.
