From SHO to constable: Delhi's first all-women police station opens in Sabzi Mandi
Delhi has opened its first fully women-run police station in Sabzi Mandi. The move is aimed at encouraging reporting, improving support and expanding gender-sensitive policing.
Delhi has got its first fully women-run police station, a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at strengthening women's safety, improving access to justice and promoting gender-sensitive policing in the national capital.
The new police station, located in the Sabzi Mandi area, was inaugurated by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday in the presence of senior police officials, including Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha. What sets the station apart is that every position—from station house officers and investigating officers to constables—will be staffed exclusively by women.
Officials said the facility has been established to provide a more supportive environment for women reporting crimes and to ensure faster, more sensitive handling of cases involving gender-based violence.
The station will focus on investigating offences such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, dowry-related abuse, stalking, cyber harassment and other crimes against women. Specially trained women police personnel have been deployed to ensure timely action and victim-centric support.
Speaking at the inauguration, Sandhu said the station would offer women a space where they can report complaints without fear or hesitation. He expressed confidence that the presence of women officers throughout the policing process would encourage more victims to come forward and seek justice.
Beyond law enforcement, the station will also provide counselling, legal assistance and psychological support to victims. Regular awareness programmes on women's rights, cyber safety and self-defence will also be conducted for women and girls.
Calling the initiative a milestone in women's safety, officials said the model is expected to boost reporting of crimes and strengthen trust between women and law enforcement agencies.
The Lieutenant Governor also announced plans to establish similar all-women police stations in other districts of Delhi in the coming years.
In a separate announcement, Sandhu said senior Delhi Police officers will begin holding weekly public grievance hearings at police stations across the city from Saturday under a new "Jan Sunwai" initiative aimed at improving police-public engagement and expediting resolution of complaints.
