2,004 calls, a missing phone, no internet for 11 hours: How cops traced Chetan

Officials said that Chetan travelled to Lohagad Fort carrying an employee's phone instead of his own to avoid digital tracking. To verify his whereabouts, police contacted people who had called his number that day.

An alleged 11-hour internet blackout, a mobile phone reportedly left behind at a shop, and CCTV footage showing a hoodie-clad man near Lohagad Fort near Pune have emerged as key pieces of evidence in the investigation into the death of 25-year-old Ketan Agrawal, according to police sources.

Officials claimed that these clues helped them uncover what they describe as a conspiracy behind Ketan's death, which took place at Lohagad Fort on June 18.

The probe reportedly gained momentum days after Ketan's funeral, when his fiancee Siya Goel visited his family. During the visit, Ketan's sister questioned Siya about the events leading up to his death and allegedly found inconsistencies in her responses. The information was shared with officials, prompting a closer examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As part of the investigation, police analysed digital records and alleged that they found frequent communication between Siya and Chetan Chaudhary. According to police sources, the two exchanged 2,004 calls between January and June and spoke for a combined 238 hours during the six-month period.

Investigators then focused on Chetan's movements on the day Ketan died.

CHETAN MOVEMENTS ON JUNE 18

According to police, Chetan switched off mobile internet services on his phone at around 7 am on June 18. About an hour later, he allegedly left his phone at his workplace and instructed employees to answer incoming calls, creating the impression that he was present at the shop throughout the day.

Officials claimed that Chetan travelled to Lohagad Fort carrying an employee's phone instead of his own to avoid leaving a digital trail. Police later contacted people who had called Chetan's number that day and found that the calls had been answered by employees at the shop rather than Chetan himself.

The internet blackout on his phone allegedly continued until around 5.40 pm, when mobile data was switched back on. Police suspect this period was used to conceal his movements.

Meanwhile, CCTV footage collected from Lohagad Fort and nearby locations allegedly showed a man wearing a hoodie moving close to Ketan and Siya during their trek. The police claimed that Siya was seen repeatedly looking back at the individual and making gestures that appeared to indicate communication.

A team from Lonavala Rural Police Station reviewed the footage on June 21 and began tracing the unidentified person's movements. Police said they matched CCTV footage with call records and other digital evidence to identify the hoodie-clad man as Chetan Chaudhary.

Officials also analysed the timeline of his journey and claimed that the entire trip to and from Lohagad Fort took around 48 minutes, suggesting that he spent only a short time at the location before leaving.

PLANNING BEFORE KETAN'S DEATH

Police sources claim the investigation also revealed a possible pattern of planning in the weeks before Ketan's death.

According to officials, Siya visited Lohagad Fort on May 31 and allegedly insisted on another visit on June 4. While Ketan's family reportedly did not allow the second visit, police suspect the earlier trip may have helped her become familiar with the location.

Officials also allege that a pre-wedding photoshoot planned in Bali on June 6 was cancelled after Ketan's passport went missing. Police suspect the document was deliberately destroyed, though the claim is part of the ongoing investigation.

Officials further claimed that an alleged attempt to harm Ketan on June 14 did not succeed.

According to police, the alleged plan culminated on June 18 when Ketan was taken to Lohagad Fort. Officials claimed that the evidence collected so far indicated the involvement of both Siya Goel and Chetan Chaudhary in Ketan's death.

The investigation is ongoing, with police continuing to examine digital records, CCTV footage and witness statements.
