High drama unfolded at the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Council on Monday as injured Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors arrived at the meeting in ambulances, days after a clash with BJP councillors inside the civic body premises, before fresh confrontations erupted between opposition parties.

Two LDF councillors, who sustained leg fractures during last week's altercation, and another councillor who suffered a head injury were brought to the council meeting in ambulances. Their arrival was seen as a symbolic protest against the alleged assault during the earlier face-off.

The injured councillors had been hurt last week when LDF members staged a protest in front of the Mayor's office. The demonstration escalated into a confrontation between LDF and BJP councillors, leaving several members injured.

On Monday, opposition LDF councillors gathered in the well of the House, leading to chaotic scenes inside the council chamber. The disruption continued until the meeting concluded, after which the LDF staged a walkout in protest.

Soon after the walkout, fresh tensions erupted as Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and BJP councillors confronted each other in the well of the House.

MAYOR ACCUSED OF ABRUPT END OF MEETING

Congress leader in the Corporation, KS Sabarinadhan, accused the Mayor of abruptly ending the council meeting to benefit BJP councillor Sugathan. He alleged that the meeting was adjourned before councillors were allowed to sign the attendance register.

"The Mayor tried to finish the council meeting early to help Sugathan. The meeting ended without allowing any of us to sign the attendance book. When UDF councillors tried to sign it, BJP councillors attempted to forcibly snatch the register from us. We resisted, and BJP councillors manhandled our women councillors," Sabarinadhan alleged.

There was no immediate response from the Mayor or BJP councillors to the allegations.

The latest confrontation comes amid escalating political tensions within the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, where repeated clashes between councillors have disrupted proceedings in recent weeks. Further action, if any, from the civic administration is awaited.
