The Bihar government is preparing to launch classes in 211 newly established degree colleges from July 1, marking a major step towards expanding access to higher education across the state.

The Higher Education Department has started making final arrangements so that teaching can begin without delay when the new academic session starts.

The initiative is part of the state's Saat Nischay-3 programme under the "Unnati Shiksha, Unnati Bhavishya" scheme. The aim is simple: ensure that every block in Bihar has access to a degree college, reducing the need for students to travel long distances to pursue higher education.

A COLLEGE CLOSER TO HOME

According to the Higher Education Department, Bihar has 534 blocks, but 211 of them currently do not have either a constituent or an affiliated degree college. To bridge this gap, the state government has approved the establishment of new colleges in all such blocks.

The move is expected to benefit thousands of students, especially those living in rural and remote areas, where limited access to higher education often forces students to discontinue their studies or relocate to other districts.

THE RACE AGAINST THE CALENDAR

With July 1 set as the target date, the department has accelerated preparations across the state. Recruitment of principals, teaching staff and non-teaching employees is already underway to ensure the colleges are ready for academic activities.

Alongside appointments, officials are arranging classrooms, furniture and other basic facilities required to run the institutions smoothly from the first day of the session.

Higher Education Director Professor N K Agrawal said the department is working on a priority basis to complete all preparations in line with the state government's directions.

A BIG PUSH FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

The government believes the expansion will make higher education more accessible and encourage more students to enrol in degree programmes.

By bringing colleges to previously underserved blocks, the initiative is expected to strengthen Bihar's higher education infrastructure while reducing geographical barriers for students.

If implemented as planned, the project could become one of the state's biggest higher education expansion drives, giving students the opportunity to continue their studies without leaving their local communities.
