No change after CBSE re-evaluation? Students can now see answer books in person

CBSE has allowed Class 12 students with unchanged review results to inspect their answer books at regional offices. The move adds transparency to the verification and re-evaluation process as revised marksheets are uploaded on DigiLocker.

Students unhappy with their CBSE Class 12 verification or re-evaluation results are getting a new option this year: they will be able to physically inspect their answer books even if their marks remain unchanged.

The board announced the move as part of a detailed clarification issued Sunday night for students and parents regarding the verification of issues observed and re-evaluation process.

PHYSICAL INSPECTION NOW ALLOWED

In what could be one of the most significant transparency measures introduced by CBSE in recent years, students whose verification requests result in a "no change" outcome will be allowed to inspect their answer books at the concerned CBSE Regional Office.

The board said the detailed schedule for inspections will be announced shortly.

"Candidates who applied for the verification of issues observed and where CBSE has reported the outcome as no-change, would be offered an opportunity, if they wish to inspect their answer books at the concerned CBSE Regional Office. The schedule for the same would be released soon," CBSE said in its latest statement.

Until now, students whose marks remained unchanged after review had little scope to examine how their answer books had been assessed.

WHAT IS VERIFICATION OF ISSUES OBSERVED?

CBSE clarified that verification and re-evaluation are two different processes.

Verification of Issues Observed allows students to report specific problems in the scanned answer book, including:

  • Missing pages
  • Missing supplementary sheets
  • Missing maps or graphs
  • Blurred pages
  • Upload of another student's answer book
  • Evaluation using the marking scheme of a different question paper set

Students could apply for verification in one or more subjects.

HOW IS RE-EVALUATION DIFFERENT?

Re-evaluation involves a fresh review of specific answers or questions after a student has obtained the scanned copy of the answer book.

Students could seek re-evaluation for one or more questions in one or more subjects.

REVISED MARKSHEETS ON DIGILOCKER

CBSE said revised results after verification and re-evaluation are being made available through DigiLocker.

The board noted that revised marksheets, wherever applicable, are being uploaded simultaneously with the review outcomes. According to CBSE, the process was completed for the majority of students on June 21, while the remaining updates will be uploaded shortly.

This means students can use the revised documents for admission purposes as soon as they appear in their DigiLocker accounts.

MARKS MAY INCREASE, DECREASE OR REMAIN SAME

The board also addressed a common misconception around re-evaluation.

CBSE said verification and re-evaluation are review processes meant to examine specific concerns raised by students and do not automatically result in higher marks.

Depending on the findings, marks may increase, decrease, or remain unchanged.

Any revision, the board said, is made only after careful review to maintain fairness and accuracy.

CBSE DEFENDS REVIEW PROCESS

The board stressed that all complaints related to missing pages, supplementary sheets, maps, graphs, blurred scans, wrong answer books, or incorrect marking schemes were examined and addressed.

CBSE also highlighted the safeguards used during the process.

Experts from IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur were involved in continuous monitoring and guidance. Every answer book undergoing re-evaluation was checked by two evaluators, while officers from CBSE headquarters and regional offices personally supervised the exercise.

NO UNUSUAL DELAY, SAYS BOARD

CBSE also responded to concerns about the timing of review results.

The board pointed out that last year's verification and re-evaluation outcomes were released between June 27 and July 11, 2025. This year, results have begun coming out earlier.

With the new inspection facility, CBSE appears to be giving students greater visibility into one of the most scrutinised stages of the examination process, while also attempting to reassure families about the fairness and accountability of its review system.
