IIM Calcutta lets MBA students build start-ups without losing placements
IIM Calcutta has introduced a new flexibility option for its MBA students, allowing them to build start-ups without permanently missing out on campus placements. The institute says students can return to placements later if they wish, marking a major shift in entrepreneurial support.

The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has announced a student-friendly initiative that allows MBA students to explore entrepreneurship without losing access to campus placements.
The move was unveiled by Director Alok Kumar Rai during the induction ceremony of the institute’s 63rd MBA batch, which comprises 480 students.
Under this new framework, students who choose to step away from placements for a year to build their start-ups will not be permanently excluded. Instead, they will be allowed to re-enter the placement process the following year if they decide to return.
FLEXIBILITY FOR FUTURE FOUNDERS
The institute has positioned the initiative as a way to encourage innovation while maintaining academic security for students.
Speaking at the event, Director Alok Kumar Rai said students opting for entrepreneurship will not lose their opportunity to participate in placements later, offering them a second chance to balance risk and career stability.
The batch includes 67 per cent male students and 33 per cent female students, with 41 per cent freshers and 59 per cent having prior work experience.
WHO’S IN THE NEW BATCH?
The new MBA cohort reflects a wide academic mix. Engineering students make up 54.7 per cent of the batch, followed by commerce (11.5 per cent), science (10.27 per cent) and arts (10 per cent), while the rest come from other disciplines.
The Freshers’ Welcome ceremony also featured industry participation. Ganesh Mohan, Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv Asset Management Ltd and an alumnus of the institute, attended as chief guest.
SCHOLARSHIPS, PARTNERSHIPS AND SUPPORT
At the event, Pranav Adani, Managing Director of Adani Enterprises, announced the continuation of the Adani Accelerated Leadership Programme, which provides full-fee scholarships to six meritorious students every year for two years.
An MoU was also signed between the institute and the Adani Group to continue their collaboration. As part of the support initiative, the group announced the donation of 200 bicycles to improve mobility on campus.
