IIT Bombay announces first US campus; here's what the India-US partnership will offer

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has signed a partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury to establish its first academic sub-campus in the United States.

The two institutions signed a Letter of Intent on Friday to develop new academic programmes and research opportunities in science and engineering at the SUNY Old Westbury campus on Long Island, New York. The agreement was signed by IIT Bombay Director Prof Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury President Dr Timothy E. Sams in the presence of Consul General of India in New York Binaya Pradhan.

The proposed IIT Bombay presence at SUNY Old Westbury will focus on science, engineering and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. The institutions will jointly develop undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes, while also promoting collaborative research, faculty exchanges and academic conferences.

Calling it a milestone in India-US academic ties, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the collaboration would enrich India's research culture, create new opportunities for students and scholars, and strengthen knowledge partnerships between the two countries.

FACULTY AND RESEARCH EXCHANGES, JOINT RESEARCH PROJECTS, ACADEMIC EVENTS

According to SUNY Old Westbury, the collaboration will begin with faculty and researcher exchanges, joint research projects and academic events before expanding into new degree programmes.

"IIT Bombay is excited to work with SUNY Old Westbury, whose leadership is committed to quality education and is forward-looking in its outlook," Prof Kedare said, adding that the institutions' complementary strengths would allow the partnership to grow significantly.

SUNY Old Westbury President Dr Timothy E. Sams said the university aims to create a "robust IIT Bombay presence" on its campus, enabling students to benefit from joint teaching and research in disciplines such as physics and engineering while preparing future global leaders.

The announcement was attended virtually by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Higher Education Secretary Dr Vineet Joshi and India's Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra. Officials described the initiative as one of the most significant developments in the growing India-US partnership in higher education and research.

The IIT Bombay-SUNY Old Westbury initiative marks IIT Bombay's first academic sub-campus in the United States and comes amid a broader push by Indian institutions to expand their global presence through international collaborations.
