In a historic moment for one of India's most prestigious educational institutions, St. Stephen's College is set to welcome its first-ever woman principal in its 145-year history. Professor Susan Elias is expected to assume office on June 1 despite objections raised by Delhi University over the appointment process.

A HISTORIC FIRST FOR ST. STEPHEN'S

Founded in 1881, St. Stephen's College has long been regarded as one of India's leading higher education institutions. The appointment of Susan Elias marks the first time a woman will lead the college as principal, making it a significant milestone in the institution's history.

Elias will become the college's 14th principal and succeeds John Varghese, whose tenure ended earlier this year.

WHY DELHI UNIVERSITY OBJECTED

The controversy began after the college announced Elias's appointment through a notification issued on May 12. Delhi University subsequently asked the college not to proceed with the appointment, arguing that the selection committee did not comply with the norms laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university also approached the UGC seeking intervention.

According to DU, the selection panel should have included university-nominated experts and a nominee of the vice-chancellor, as required under UGC regulations.

COLLEGE CITES MINORITY STATUS

College authorities have defended the appointment process by citing St Stephen's minority institution status under Article 30(1) of the Constitution. The institution maintains that it enjoys autonomy in matters related to appointments and administration.

Officials associated with the college have indicated that Elias will assume charge as planned despite the university's objections.

A LONG-STANDING DU-ST STEPHEN'S TUSSLE

The latest disagreement is part of a broader and long-running dispute between Delhi University and St Stephen's College over governance and administrative autonomy. The issue follows earlier disagreements regarding the recognition of former principal John Varghese's second term.

The current controversy has also revived discussions around a 2008 Delhi High Court judgment involving former principal Valson Thampu. In that case, the court held that St Stephen's, as a minority institution, was not bound by certain Delhi University provisions regarding the constitution of selection committees for principals.

WHO IS SUSAN ELIAS?

Susan Elias is a computer scientist and academic administrator with more than three decades of experience in higher education. She has previously served in leadership roles at institutions including Chandigarh University and VIT Chennai. She holds advanced qualifications in engineering and has worked extensively in areas such as artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Her appointment is being viewed by many as a step towards greater gender representation in leadership positions within India's elite educational institutions.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Despite Delhi University's objections, St Stephen's College appears determined to proceed with the appointment. The development is expected to intensify the ongoing debate over the autonomy of minority educational institutions and the extent of university oversight in appointments and governance matters.

As Susan Elias takes charge, the appointment stands as both a historic breakthrough and the latest chapter in the complex relationship between St Stephen's College and Delhi University.
