Sad, they haven’t learnt their lessons: SC raps NTA over NEET-UG paper leak

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices in petitions concerning the NEET-UG examination, even as it raised pointed questions over the implementation of reforms recommended after previous controversies surrounding the national medical entrance test that saw nearly 23 lakh candidates appear this year.

At the outset, the Court issued notices in the matter and connected petitions, while directing that copies of the writ petitions be furnished to the Solicitor General of India.

PETITIONERS CITE URGENCY IN MATTER

Appearing for the petitioners, Advocate Tanvi Dubey underscored the urgency of the issue, telling the Court that the matter pertains to NEET-UG, the examination conducted for admission to medical courses, in which around 23 lakh candidates appeared.

Dubey urged the Court to take up the matter expeditiously and sought an early date for the hearing.

The Court, however, widened the focus beyond the immediate dispute, turning its attention to compliance with earlier reform measures introduced after past concerns involving examination processes.

'THEY HAVEN’T LEARNT THEIR LESSONS': COURT PULLS UP AUTHORITIES

Expressing concern over the situation, the Bench remarked, “So sad, they haven’t learnt their lessons. We constituted a committee.”

The Court referred to the monitoring and reform mechanisms previously put in place and sought accountability regarding their implementation.

NTA ASKED TO FILE AFFIDAVITS WITHIN THREE DAYS

In its directions, the Court ordered the National Testing Agency (NTA) to file an affidavit detailing the status of the monitoring committee constituted on November 14.

The Bench also directed J Radhakrishna to place on record the steps taken to ensure compliance with the recommendations of the high-powered committee constituted earlier to strengthen examination safeguards.

Both affidavits have been directed to be filed within three days.

The Court ordered the issuance of notices on the main and connected matters, directing that copies of the writ petitions be served upon the learnt Solicitor General of India.

The matter is now expected to return before the Court after the affidavits are filed, with scrutiny likely to centre on whether institutional reforms promised after earlier NEET controversies have actually been implemented.
