AAP Goa opposes E20 fuel rollout, urges people to join August 1 town hall
AAP in Goa has launched a campaign against the rollout of E20 petrol and urged people to join an August 1 town hall called by Arvind Kejriwal. The party says motorists are facing lower mileage and engine troubles without cheaper fuel or any real choice.
The Aam Aadmi Party in Goa on Monday launched a campaign against what it called the "forced implementation" of E20, or 20 per cent ethanol-blended, fuel, and appealed to people in the state to take part in a town hall on the issue in New Delhi on August 1. The party said the online event has been called by its national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
Speaking to reporters, AAP Goa president Valmiki Naik alleged that E20 fuel reduces mileage and damages engines without giving consumers any price relief. He urged people in Goa to join the town hall by registering on a WhatsApp number circulated by the party.
Naik claimed that AAP leaders had visited garages, workshops and petrol pumps across Goa to assess public feedback, and found that vehicle owners frequently complained of a drop in mileage and engine-related problems after using the blended fuel. He said the party had been consistently raising the issue across the country and had written to automobile manufacturers seeking written assurances that E20 fuel would not damage vehicles.
He also said Kejriwal had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a reduction in the price of E20 petrol if consumers were being compelled to use it despite what the party described as lower mileage and higher maintenance costs. Naik claimed that nearly two lakh people had shared their views through the party's "Stop E20 Petrol" campaign.
"The government has failed to take responsibility for the problems arising out of this policy or provide any meaningful solution. Consumers have not been given a choice," Naik alleged. AAP Goa vice-president Manuel Cardoso said that during the party's survey at petrol pumps, many consumers were unaware that E20 petrol had already been introduced. He also alleged that mechanics had reported an increase in complaints related to carburettors, fuel systems and engine performance, which he linked to the use of E20 fuel.
The party said its campaign was aimed at opposing the rollout of E20 fuel while gathering public opinion, with AAP leaders in Goa citing consumer complaints, concerns raised by mechanics and the planned August 1 town hall as part of its push on the issue.
