Akanksha had earlier revealed on the premiere of the show that she and Gaurav had been living separately for the past year and were moving ahead with a mutual divorce. She said there was no bad blood between them, but they were not compatible as partners because they saw very different futures.
In the third episode of the reality show, the 35-year-old revealed that she realised early in her marriage that she did not have a maternal instinct. She added that she had been upfront about her feelings with Gaurav from the very beginning.
Speaking to content creators Shreya Kalra and Sufi Motiwala, fellow contestants on the show, Akanksha said, “When we were married, I never had any maternal instinct. But I was open to discovering it; it was never shut down. Gradually, I realised I am not meant for it. He was okay with it, but I guess with time, that shifted. Now he wants to have kids, and when I see that, I cannot give him that ever. I had told him long back, when I had realised I was not cut out to be a mother, that I would never become a mother.”
She added, “We had a discussion where I told him that you can leave me and that it would be fair because this is why most people marry. 99 per cent of people get married because they want to have kids and continue their family. Then Bigg Boss happened, and I realised that he wants to have a kid badly, and I cannot do it. I didn’t want to put him in that situation.”
When asked whether she was also against adoption, Akanksha replied, “I want to be child-free for a reason, I want to be free.”
The issue was previously discussed on Bigg Boss 19, when Gaurav Khanna spoke about his wife's decision not to have children. He had been criticised by some viewers for bringing up his personal life on the show.
During a media interaction in the finale week, Gaurav said he stood by Akanksha's decision but also expressed his desire to have a family someday.
Gaurav Khanna and Akanksha Chamola got married on November 24, 2016, in Kanpur. Akanksha has appeared in television shows such as Santoshi Maa, Yeh Hai Aashiqui and Crime Patrol.
Lock Upp is streaming on Netflix, with new episodes dropping every Saturday to Wednesday.
