Fact Check: Old Muslim man slapped by a Hindu? This video shows a father-son dispute
Two videos going viral on social media allegedly show Muslims being attacked by Hindus. India Today Fact Check found that neither video has any communal angle.
A video going viral on social media shows a young man slapping an elderly Muslim man. Those sharing the video claimed that the young man was Hindu and that he attacked the Muslim man over his faith.
Sharing the video on X, one person wrote, “A poor, elderly, disabled Muslim man was savagely and inhumanly brutalised by a Hindutva rogue solely for wearing a prayer cap.”
India Today Fact Check found that this video from Uttar Pradesh actually shows a Muslim man assaulting his father over a property dispute.
OUR PROBE
Reverse-searching frames from the viral video led us to several news reports related to this incident. As per an NDTV report published on June 9, this incident was from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The report said that the man seen assaulting the elderly person, Haji Tehseen, was his son, Gulfishan.
According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, 72-year-old Tehseen was assaulted by his son over a property dispute. This incident fell under the jurisdiction of the Qutub Sher Police Station. After the video surfaced online, the police arrested Gulfishan. Haji Tehseen then appealed to the police to release his son.
Thus, it is evident that there is no communal angle to the video.
ANOTHER VIDEO, SAME CLAIM
Another video going viral shows several young men whipping a man with belts. When a girl tries to intervene, she gets slapped as well. The video was shared on X with captions like, “A Muslim youth is beaten by Hindutva fanatics, even when a woman came to rescue him, she also got beaten.”
We reverse-searched the video and found a Dainik Bhaskar report about it. The incident reportedly took place within the jurisdiction of the Bannadevi Police Station in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The report said that a boy and a girl were caught by their family members while roaming together in Aligarh’s Mangal Bazar Numaish area.
A Hindustan report identified the victim as Sonu. We also contacted the Bannadevi Police Station, where SHO Rajeev Kumar denied any communal angle to the incident. He confirmed that the victim's name was Sonu. He further said that Sonu and his attackers were all Hindus.
In a post on X, the Aligarh Police also stated that three accused — Aaksh, Ankur, and Ashish — had been arrested in connection with the case.
Thus, it’s clear that both claims are verifiably false.
