India Today Fact Check

Claim
These are the main accused of the Sri Ganganagar gangrape, being paraded by the police.
Fact

This April video is from Gujarat’s Kheda district. It shows the arrest of eight people accused of raping and blackmailing a 17-year-old.

The Rajasthan Police have arrested 18 suspects so far in connection with the kidnapping and gangrape of a 12-year-old in Sri Ganganagar. The government has also demolished the hotel where this allegedly took place.

Meanwhile, videos purportedly showing police publicly parading the main accused in this case have gone viral on social media. But many of these videos have nothing to do with the case.

In this story, we will debunk three such clips. All three are from Gujarat.

GANG ARREST

This video shows several people being paraded on the road with their hands tied. Some policemen can also be seen beating them with sticks. Sharing the video on X, one person wrote, “32G-HADISTS subjected a mere 13-year-old girl to five days of Assault, brutality & R@pe. These perpetrators must receive the harshest possible punishment & example should be set.”

Reverse searching frames of the video led us to several news reports from March this year featuring screenshots of the viral video. According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, the incident took place in the Patan district of Gujarat, where police thrashed 18 individuals belonging to an alleged gang. The gang reportedly attacked a local farmhouse and a police PCR van, following a dispute over temple donations.

There are several other reports confirming this as well. Thus, it’s clear that the video has no connection to the Rajasthan incident.

Notably, in the Sri Ganganagar case, the arrested include Mayank, 20; Hardeep Singh, 38; Ram Babu, 27; Sachin Kumar,18; and Gurpal alias Guri, 18.

DIFFERENT RAPE CASE

Another video showing a similar scene has gone viral with people linking it to the Sri Ganganagar case. A quick reverse image search of the video led us to a Facebook post by Brut India featuring the same clip. According to the post, this video is also from Gujarat.

In Kheda district, police arrested eight people accused of repeatedly raping and blackmailing a 17-year-old. As per an April 18 report by ETV Bharat, the victim had been exploited for three years through threats of circulating her pictures and videos online.

MOLESTER THRASHED BY MOB

This video shows a man being publicly thrashed and beaten, and then forced into a police vehicle. This video has also gone viral with claims that it shows one of the accused in the Sri Ganganagar incident.

However, the video dates back to April and is from Gujarat. According to an Instagram post by the Ahmedabad Mirror, the video from Surat shows public outrage against an individual who allegedly molested a 12-year-old girl.

As per a Times of India report, the accused was thrashed twice by angry residents: once when he was caught, and again when he was brought back to the crime scene by the police.
