Mangaluru woman, her daughters killed as rain-triggered landslide brings down house
Three members of a family, including two young girls, were killed after a rain-triggered landslide destroyed their house in Mangaluru, while rescue teams saved three others.

Three members of a family, including two young girls, were killed and three others were rescued after a rain-triggered landslide destroyed a house in Mangaluru in the early hours of Wednesday, officials said.
The house was buried under a mound of earth after heavy overnight rain caused a landslide in the Nagori area. Officials said six family members were trapped under the debris when the structure collapsed.
Residents, Fire and Emergency Services personnel and other rescue teams rushed to the spot and began efforts to pull out those trapped. The deceased were identified as Shanta, 46, her eight-year-old daughter Anamika Chaurasia, and four-year-old daughter Pari.
Three others, Balkrishna, 48, Alka, 14, and Anusha, 11, were rescued alive from the debris and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, officials said.
The family, originally from Bihar, had been living in the Kankanady area for the past two decades. Preliminary findings showed that a large mass of soil from the hill above the house gave way due to incessant rain, causing the house to collapse.
Personnel of the National Disaster Response Force later joined the search and rescue operation. After the bodies of the three victims were recovered from the debris, the operation was concluded. Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan visited the site, reviewed the situation and received updates from officials leading the rescue effort.
The district administration has urged people living in hilly and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as heavy rain continues in the coastal district. Officials have also started a study of the area around the site to assess whether it is safe for residents.
The incident left three members of the family dead and three injured, while authorities continued to monitor safety risks in the surrounding area amid ongoing heavy rain.
