UP woman dies after being tied to pillar for 10 days during faith-healing ritual
Police have arrested the woman's husband, Ankit Yadav, self-styled godman Munna, 71, and his associate Kadir Ahmad, 55, in connection with the case.
A 33-year-old woman allegedly died after she was kept tied to a pillar for around 10 days in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district, where a self-styled godman and others were allegedly carrying out “faith healing” rituals to treat her alleged mental illness, police said on Wednesday.
Police have arrested the woman's husband, Ankit Yadav, self-styled godman Munna, 71, and his associate Kadir Ahmad, 55, in connection with the case. Further action will be taken after the post-mortem report is received and the investigation findings are examined, police said.
According to police, Ruby Yadav, a resident of Gomtinagar in Lucknow, was brought to the Community Health Centre in Deva on Monday evening after her condition worsened. Doctors declared her dead later that night.
A preliminary inquiry found that Ruby had allegedly been tied to a pillar for around 10 days at a site in the Deva area, located some distance away from a shrine. Police said “rituals” were being performed there in the name of treating her mental illness.
In his complaint, Ruby's father Pramod Yadav, a resident of Sitapur district, alleged that his son-in-law, along with the self-styled godman and his associate, kept his daughter tied to the pillar for several days while carrying out “exorcism” and other rituals. He alleged that her condition deteriorated during this period and she eventually died.
Station House Officer Alok Mani Tripathi of Deva said the three accused were arrested on the basis of the complaint. He said they were booked and remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a court.
