A preliminary post-mortem in the murder of a 12-year-old girl in West Bengal has revealed chilling details, indicating she suffered head injuries and sexual assault before being thrown alive into a pond, where she later drowned. The findings have emerged as police deepen their investigation and arrest the alleged main accused, taking the total number of arrests to three.

Police said the examination found injury marks on the girl's private parts, along with scratch and bite marks across her body.

According to a senior police officer, the report also indicated that her head had either been struck with a heavy object or banged against a hard surface.

The examination found water in the girl's lungs and stomach, suggesting she was still alive when she was thrown into the pond. Police sources believe excessive bleeding caused by the head injury, along with drowning, led to her death.

"The investigation is at a crucial stage. We are examining all evidence. The preliminary post-mortem findings are being corroborated with other material collected during the probe," a senior police officer said.

HOW THE CASE UNFOLDED

The girl had left her home in South 24 Parganas district on Saturday to buy a birthday gift for a friend but did not return. Her family lodged a missing complaint, and her body was recovered from a pond on Sunday after being found stuffed inside a sack.

Police are analysing CCTV footage that reportedly shows the girl being taken away by four people.

"We are pursuing all available leads. CCTV footage, forensic evidence and witness statements are being examined. Those involved will be identified and arrested at the earliest," the officer said.

THREE ARRESTED, MAIN ACCUSED HELD

Police have arrested the alleged main accused, Ananda Sardar, taking the total number of arrests to three. The other two arrested have been identified as Dibakar Sardar and Prabhas Mondal, while three more suspects are being questioned.

OUTRAGE AFTER BODY RECOVERED

The recovery of the girl's body triggered widespread protests in the area. A man suspected of involvement in the crime was lynched by a mob, while demonstrators blocked roads and railway tracks and vandalised police vehicles.

Police later registered separate FIRs related to the girl's murder, the mob lynching and attacks on law enforcement personnel, as the investigation continued under heavy security deployment.
