A 12-year-old girl was killed and several police personnel narrowly escaped injury after a truck allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver went on a nearly two-hour rampage across state and national highways in Chhattisgarh's Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki on Friday. The accused was eventually arrested near Korkotti village, around six kilometres before the Maharashtra border.

According to police, the incident began in Gunderdehi village, where the speeding truck ran over the girl, identified as Poonam. Instead of stopping after the accident, the driver fled the scene, prompting police to launch a pursuit.

Acting on the information, police set up barricades outside Mohla police station in an attempt to intercept the truck. However, the driver allegedly rammed another truck parked near the police station before breaking through the barricades and continuing towards Manpur.

Police then established another checkpoint near the SDM office in Manpur. Despite repeated attempts by officers to stop the vehicle, the driver reportedly drove the truck through the barricades once again, dragging them along and entering the Manpur town area on the National Highway. Police personnel standing behind the barricades managed to escape moments before the truck passed through.

THE DRIVER WAS ARRESTED AFTER 2 HOURS OF CHASE

The chase continued onto the National Highway leading towards Maharashtra. Officials said the driver appeared to be attempting to cross into the neighbouring state. However, near Korkotti village, the truck lost control and veered off the road, allowing police to overpower and arrest the driver. As he sustained injuries during the incident, he was taken to Manpur Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the death of the minor sparked protests in Gunderdehi village. Angry residents and the victim's family placed the girl's body on the road and staged a blockade, disrupting traffic on the state highway for nearly two hours. The protest ended after senior administrative and police officials assured the family of appropriate action.

Police later sent the body for post-mortem examination before handing it over to the family. The truck has been seized, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
