Congress set dangerous precedent by protesting outside PM residence: Govt sources
The sources said such protests were "not seen in mature democracies" and warned that demonstrations targeting the residences of political leaders could have serious consequences.
Government sources on Tuesday strongly criticised the Congress after senior party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, led a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official residence in New Delhi, calling the demonstration a serious security concern and accusing the opposition of setting a "wrong and dangerous precedent".
The sources said protests targeting the residences of political leaders were "not seen in mature democracies" and warned that such actions could pose security risks and undermine democratic norms.
The remarks came after Congress leaders marched towards Lok Kalyan Marg, demanding accountability over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and action over the police crackdown on students protesting the issue a day earlier.

Government sources said the Congress protest outside the Prime Minister's residence crossed a line and raised serious security concerns.
"Congress has set a very wrong and dangerous precedent by protesting outside the PM's residence. It is not only a security threat, but such spiteful behaviour is not seen in mature democracies," government sources said.
The sources also warned against demonstrations directed at the residences of political leaders.
"We should also not forget what happened in our neighbourhood when such protests targeted the residences of leaders," the sources added.
Government sources were referring to recent unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh and Nepal, where protests spilled over to the official residences of political leaders. In Bangladesh, protesters stormed Ganabhaban, the official residence of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, after she resigned and fled the country in August 2024. In Nepal, anti-government demonstrations targeted and vandalised the residences of several senior political leaders, including former prime ministers and cabinet ministers, during periods of political unrest.
RAHUL, PRIYANKA DETAINED
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were detained by the Delhi Police while leading the protest. Several Congress MPs, party workers and senior leaders, including Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also joined the demonstration.
Police dispersed the protesters after they marched from Rajaji Marg towards the Prime Minister's residence. Visuals from the scene showed security personnel carrying Rahul Gandhi away after he resisted detention during a sit-in protest. An aide later said he suffered an injury below his eye.
There were also dramatic scenes involving Priyanka Gandhi, who was seen holding onto the door of a police bus as it began moving after detentions.
Reacting to the police action, Priyanka Gandhi said, "They are cowards. They are scared. We are not scared of them. They are scared of us."
