High Court grants three-day bail to Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid
The Delhi High Court, which has allowed Umar Khalid to be released from June 1-3 in view of his mother's surgery, has imposed strict conditions on his movements.

The Delhi High Court on Friday granted interim bail to activist and former JNU student leader Umar Khalid for three days in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. Khalid, who has been languishing in jail for six years now, will be released from June 1-3 in view of his mother's surgery. The High Court, which has asked Khalid to pay a surety of Rs 1 lakh, has also imposed strict conditions on his movements.
A division bench of Justices Prathiba Singh and Madhu Jain said Khalid would have to stay at his address and could only visit his mother in the hospital. Khalid cannot go to any other place, the court directed.
"He (Khalid) shall remain in the national capital region and stay at his address. He shall not be allowed to visit any other location other than the hospital. He shall have only one mobile number," the High Court directed.
Khalid has been accused by the Delhi Police of being the "key conspirator" in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, which left 53 people dead and hundreds injured. He has been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which punishes terror acts.
Khalid moved the High Court after a trial court rejected his request for temporary release on May 19. During the hearing on Friday, Khalid sought 15 days' interim bail from May 22 to June 5.
The former JNU leader cited the Chehlum ceremony (mourning event) of his deceased uncle and to care for his 62-year-old mother, who is scheduled to undergo surgery for a cyst on her back on June 2.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the Delhi Police, opposed his plea. "Surgery (of mother) seems to be minor. Five sisters can look after her. He can go with a police escort for a day," the ASG said.
The High Court, however, granted Khalid an interim bail for three days. The activist has been granted interim bail previously as well, but he has yet to secure regular bail in the matter.
