Kerala under rain watch as heavy downpour continues, 7 districts under red alert
Kerala remained on high alert as relentless rains disrupted normal life across the state, with the IMD issuing a red alert for seven districts. An orange alert was issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, where moderate rainfall of 5 mm to 15 mm per hour and wind speeds of up to 50 kmph were forecast at isolated places.
Meanwhile, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Lakshadweep remained under a yellow alert, with light to moderate rainfall below 15 mm per hour and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph expected.
Amid the heavy downpour, district administrations in Ernakulam and Thrissur declared a holiday for educational institutions on Friday. Earlier, similar closures had been announced in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
Although floodwaters have begun receding in parts of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, several residents continue to remain in relief camps due to ongoing rains. The Upper Kuttanad and Kuttanad regions of Alappuzha remain inundated, though water levels are gradually decreasing, officials said.
Coastal areas have also been impacted by high waves, sea incursion and strong winds.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a warning over the ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon, predicting swell waves between 1.1 metres and 1.5 metres that could lead to sea incursion along parts of the Kerala coast.
The warning is in effect until 11.30 am on August 7 for coastal areas of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable coastal areas to remain alert, avoid venturing into the sea, refrain from operating small boats and fishing vessels during high-wave conditions, and stay away from beaches and coastal tourism activities until the warning is withdrawn. Residents have also been cautioned about the risk of coastal erosion.
