Ex-TMC MLA arrested in UP after interstate chase by cops in attempted murder case

A former TMC legislator wanted in an extortion and attempted murder case was tracked across states and arrested near a toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh, ending a manhunt that had stretched for days.

A former Trinamool Congress MLA wanted in an extortion and attempted murder case was arrested in Uttar Pradesh by a team of West Bengal Police after being tracked across state borders, officials said.

Khokon Das, a former TMC legislator from West Bengal's Burdwan South Assembly constituency, was arrested near the Handia toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj district. The operation was carried out by Burdwan Police with assistance from the local Handia police.

According to police, a case was registered against Das on June 6, 2025, under multiple charges, including extortion, criminal intimidation and attempted murder. Investigators had been searching for him for several days in connection with the case.

ARREST NEAR TOLL PLAZA

Police said they received information from sources that Das was travelling from Delhi to Kolkata in a Toyota Fortuner. Acting on the tip-off, officers laid a trap near the toll plaza and intercepted the vehicle when it arrived.

Das was taken into custody along with three other occupants travelling in the SUV. The arrest brought an end to an interstate search operation launched by the West Bengal Police.

TRANSIT REMAND GRANTED

Following his arrest, Das was produced before a judicial magistrate. The court granted transit remand, allowing the West Bengal Police team to take him back to the state for further investigation.

Officials said the accused was subsequently taken to West Bengal by the police team.

POLITICAL BACKGROUND

Khokon Das is a well-known figure in West Bengal politics and has represented the Burdwan South Assembly constituency as a Trinamool Congress MLA after winning the 2021 Assembly election.

He, however, lost the 2026 Assembly election. Despite the defeat, Das remained active in local politics and party affairs.

Police said multiple allegations, including extortion, threats and attempted murder, had been levelled against the former legislator, leading to the registration of the FIR and the subsequent search operation that culminated in his arrest in Uttar Pradesh.
