West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari warned of a tough crackdown on violence and stone-pelting after visiting Kolkata’s Park Circus area, where police and central force personnel were injured in clashes a day earlier, saying such incidents would be dealt with under a “zero tolerance” policy.

Addressing a press conference after meeting injured personnel, Adhikari said “stone-pelting was put to an end in Kashmir a long time ago” and asserted that “all forms of hooliganism in Bengal are coming to an end” as he instructed police officers to act without fear or political pressure.

The Chief Minister described the previous day’s violence as a premeditated act and warned that strict action would follow if such incidents were repeated.

“If you have committed any unlawful acts in this area, let this be the very last time. If you do it again, you will find no Police Minister more ruthless than me,” Adhikari said.

He urged police officers to act without fear and ignore political or religious considerations while enforcing the law.

“Do not concern yourselves with anyone's political affiliation, influential connections or religious background. Just do your job,” he said, adding that officers had the support of both the state government and the Home Ministry.

“As the Prime Minister has already stated: ‘Trust in; Fear out.’ I am pleased with your performance. Take lawful action under the BNS and maintain a policy of zero tolerance,” he said.

Adhikari also said the state government would request the Centre to continue deploying central paramilitary forces in Bengal until the panchayat arrangements were stabilised.

“We will request the central government to keep 40 companies of central forces here. Otherwise, there will be a manpower shortage,” he said.

Speaking in Hindi during his interaction with the media, Adhikari said he had visited the area to meet injured police personnel and central force jawans.

“We will not allow anti-social and anti-national activities. If anyone raises a hand against the police again, they will be punished,” he said.

“The days when a police minister would sit in an air-conditioned room while police personnel were injured are over,” he added.

Adhikari also praised senior police officers, calling them patriotic and saying the force had earlier been unable to function effectively because of political pressure.

“Kolkata Police will become the best within some months,” he said.
