Despite the release of the accused, the mystery surrounding the case remains unresolved.

A murder case in Maharashtra's Buldhana district took an unexpected turn after the woman believed to be dead appeared before police alive. This resulted in the release of her father and brother who had been jailed for her alleged murder.

The case began a few days ago when police recovered a partially burnt body, severed into two parts, from a forest area in Buldhana district. Investigators initially believed the body belonged to a woman named Shivani and subsequently registered a murder case against her father, Bapurao Natthu Kalmekar, and brother. The two were arrested and later remanded to judicial custody by a court.

However, the investigation took a dramatic turn when Shivani herself appeared before the police and stated that she was alive. She also demanded the release of her father and brother, who had been jailed in connection with her alleged murder. Following her appearance and statement, the court ordered their release.

After walking out of jail, Shivani's father was asked why he had confessed to the murder despite not committing it. He said he had made the statement in anger because his daughter had repeatedly run away from home.

Bapurao claimed that he had not been forced or pressured by the police to confess. According to him, he falsely accepted responsibility for the crime out of frustration over his daughter's repeated actions. His statement has raised fresh questions about how the investigation progressed and why such a confession was accepted before the victim's identity was conclusively established.

The developments have also prompted departmental action. Buldhana Superintendent of Police Nilesh Tambe has attached two senior officers and four police personnel to headquarters over alleged lapses in the handling of the case. Those transferred include Local Crime Branch officer Sunil Ambulkar, Jalgaon Jamod police station in-charge Nitin Patil, Police Sub-Inspector Pankaj Sapkale and three other staff members.

Despite the release of the accused, the mystery surrounding the case remains unresolved. The identity of the woman whose body was discovered in the forest has yet to be established, and investigators are now faced with the challenge of determining who she was and who was responsible for her death.

Police have said the investigation is continuing and all aspects of the case are being re-examined.
