Dowry abuse, CCTV surveillance: Woman dies by suicide only 47 days into marriage
Victim Vishakha Tilkar married Dr Nitin Tilkar on May 30. Their relationship during the initial days was cordial, but gradually Vishakha was subjected to alleged physical and mental assault.
A 26-year-old newlywed woman allegedly died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Ambernath just around one-and-a-half months after her marriage. The victim's family has accused her husband and in-laws of sustained dowry harassment, physical abuse and constant CCTV surveillance tracking her daily activities that possibly pushed her to the brink.
Police have arrested her husband Nitin Tilkar, his mother and brother, and launched an investigation into the case.
The victim, identified as Vishakha Tilkar, had married Dr Nitin Tilkar on April 30.
According to her family, relations between the two families remained cordial before the wedding, but circumstances allegedly changed soon after she moved into her matrimonial home.
Her family alleged that Vishakha was repeatedly subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws over dissatisfaction with gifts and wedding-related exchanges.
They claimed she was pressured to bring gold and cash from her parental home and faced repeated intimidation whenever she was not able to fulfil these demands.
The family further alleged that her husband had put her under constant surveillance by installing CCTV cameras inside and outside the house, and closely monitored her day-to-day activities.
According to the complaint, Vishakha was questioned over routine interactions and allegedly faced confrontation and assault if she was seen speaking to neighbours or others.
The victim’s family members also alleged that two days before her death, Vishakha was physically assaulted after speaking to a woman living nearby.
On Tuesday, Vishakha was found hanging inside her matrimonial home.
After receiving information, police from Shivajinagar police station reached the spot, took custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Police said preliminary inquiry indicated the presence of CCTV cameras at the residence and suggested that the husband monitored the victim’s movements.
Based on a complaint filed by Vishakha’s family, a case was registered against husband Dr Nitin Tilkar, mother-in-law Chhaya Tilkar and brother-in-law Ninad Tilkar under charges including abetment of suicide, dowry-related harassment and other applicable provisions.
All three accused were arrested on Wednesday.
Investigators are now collecting evidence, examining digital equipment and recording statements to establish the circumstances leading to the woman’s death. Police said all aspects of the case are being examined, and further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
