Mamata claims 'house arrest' over bid to meet Baruipur victim's family

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has claimed that its chief, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been placed under house arrest to prevent her from travelling to Baruipur, where she intended to meet the family of a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered.
In a post on X, the party alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led administration in West Bengal, after learning of Banerjee's proposed visit, deployed a large police force and erected barricades outside her residence to stop her from leaving for Baruipur.
"Our Chairperson, @MamataOfficial, wanted to visit Baruipur. Upon learning this, a massive deployment of police personnel and barricades was put in place outside her residence to prevent her from leaving," the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) said in the post.
"Despite these attempts to stop her, our demand remains unchanged: #JusticeForBaruipur. Didi stands firmly with the victim’s family and is committed to ensuring they receive justice," it added.
The controversy comes amid outrage over the alleged rape and murder of the minor girl in the Surjyapur area of Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district. The case took a dramatic turn on Sunday when one of the accused died after he was allegedly lynched by the victim's relatives and local residents, sparking protests and tension in the area.
Police said the minor had left her home on Saturday afternoon to buy a birthday gift for a friend but failed to return. Her family alleged that four men had forcibly taken her away and claimed that their appeals for help were not adequately acted upon by the police. They said they spent the night searching for her.
According to police, local residents on Sunday morning apprehended one of the suspects, who allegedly revealed where the girl's body had been concealed. Acting on the information, residents recovered the body from the Surjyapur Haat area, where it was allegedly found stuffed inside a sack near a pond.
Police have detained a person identified as an alleged BJP worker in connection with the case and have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident.
