Parliament Monsoon Session 2026 Highlights: Both Houses adjourned for the day amid Opposition uproar on NEET leak, CJP protest

Second day of Parliament Monsoon session washed out as Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day. Both Houses will reconvene tomorrow.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday criticised the government for refusing to allow a discussion in Parliament on the NEET controversy and the police action against student protesters, asking, "If Parliament is not a forum to discuss, then what is?"

Calling the situation "really unfortunate", Tharoor said Parliament exists to debate issues of national importance and urged the Speaker to break the deadlock by allowing an open discussion.

"We have a number of issues that are burning up the nation, including this capital city. We've seen what happened yesterday. The Speaker should take matters into his own hands and resolve this deadlock in Parliament by inviting an open discussion on the entire situation," he said.

Tharoor said around 100 people were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and questioned how the government could ignore the issue.

"How can you refuse to let Parliament function? It is unconscionable on the part of the government," he said, adding that the government should immediately hold a discussion in the House.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore said the Opposition was not allowed to raise the issue of the police action against CJP protesters and demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah answer in the House.

“LoP Rahul Gandhi and all the Opposition leaders met the Speaker and demanded that yesterday's lathi-charge should be discussed in the Parliament. We raised the issue in the Question Hour, but we were not allowed to do so. We want the Home Minister to come to the House and answer," he said.

Revolutionary Socialist Party MP NK Premachandran questioned the government's reluctance to discuss the NEET paper leak issue and corruption allegations in Ayodhya, asking, "What prevents the government from discussing the NEET paper leak issue and corruption allegations in Ayodhya?"

The Lok Sabha Speaker told the Opposition that he would have to consult the government before allowing a discussion on the NEET issue, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said. The opposition leaders earlier met the speaker demanding discussion on the NEET row and action against the CJP protest.

"We met the Speaker and told him that we wanted to discuss the issue concerning students. The Speaker told us that he would have to seek the government's permission to allow a discussion. You can understand what this means, the Speaker is saying that a debate in Parliament requires the government's approval. He is openly telling us that," he said.

He questioned the Prime Minister's silence over the police action against the VJP protesters and demanded that the Prime Minister respond to the issue.

Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 pm after Opposition MPs staged a protest in the House well, demanding a discussion on NEET.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that his microphone was switched off as soon as he began speaking in the Rajya Sabha, asking, "Is this democracy?"

"If you do not want debate in a democracy, if you do not want to hear us, where will we go? We also wanted to know what was discussed with JP Nadda. We also wanted to know what happened in their internal meeting. It is important to tell the people about this. So, we wanted a discussion on this, followed by a statement from the Home Minister. Floor leaders should have been allowed to speak on this... They are making every attempt to finish off democracy," he said.

Rajya Sabha adjourned to meet again at 2 pm amid opposition protests.

The Opposition continued uproar in the Lok Sabha, demanding a discussion on the NEET row and the police action against CJP protesters, as the House resumed proceedings at 12 noon.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla along with MPs from Opposition parties, demanding a detailed discussion in Parliament on the alleged police action against students during the CJP protest and the ongoing examination crisis, India Today TV's Musami Singh reports.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Gandhi said the Opposition had made a "simple demand" that Parliament hold a detailed discussion on "the brutality unleashed on students yesterday" and what he described as the government's "complete lack of accountability" over the examination crisis.

"Students were beaten for asking legitimate questions about their own future," Gandhi said, adding, "If Parliament cannot discuss the future of India's youth, what is it for?"

He asserted that the Opposition would continue to press for a discussion inside the House and would not allow the issue to be ignored.

"The Opposition will not let this be buried. We will ensure that the students' voice will be heard on the streets, and in Parliament," Gandhi said.

Leaders of the INDIA bloc held a strategy meeting at Parliament House earlier to coordinate their joint approach and finalise floor tactics ahead of the ongoing Monsoon Session proceedings.

At the meeting, Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his outrage over the crackdown on Delhi protesters, and sharing details of the meeting, he wrote, “This is not how a 'Mother of Democracy' treats its young children. In these painful circumstances, I have decided not to celebrate my birthday today.”

Rajya Sabha was adjourned amid an uproar after Mallikarjun Kharge attempted to raise the BJP protest and the NEET exam mess in the House.

Lok Sabha was adjourned within minutes of resuming as the Opposition pressed for a discussion on NEET and the Delhi protest. The House will reconvene at 12 pm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the NEET paper leak issue during the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting, saying the Centre acted immediately after the matter came to light.

Describing the paper leak as a "ghor paap" (a grave sin), the Prime Minister said all state governments must work together to ensure that such incidents do not recur. He also said that all those involved have been identified, with 13 people arrested so far, and stressed that the strongest possible action should be taken against those responsible.
