Parliament Monsoon Session 2026 Highlights: Both Houses adjourned, Minister Jitendra Singh meets Amit Shah

Rajya Sabha, which reconvened at 3 pm, adjourned again over opposition uproar. The House will resume on Friday.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of setting up fast-track courts for paper leak cases, saying securing the future of India's youth remains the NDA government's highest priority.

In a post on X, Singh said the move reflected the Prime Minister's "firm resolve and unwavering commitment" to empowering young people, adding that speedy trials would ensure swift and stringent action against those who jeopardise the aspirations and future of the country's youth.

Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for PMO, met Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the Centre's strategy on the NEET paper leak case, sources said.

Lok Sabha has been adjourned to meet again at 11 am on Friday as the Opposition continued its uproar, demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation over the NEET paper leak.

Rajya Sabha also adjourned to meet at 3 pm today.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resumed proceedings at 2 pm after being adjourned over the Opposition uproar.

In a conversation with news agency ANI, DMK MP P Wilson said that his party wanted the abolition of the NEET examination from the very beginning.

"We wanted NEET to be abolished right from the start. Tamil Nadu has been fighting against NEET. When the DMK came to power, our former CM MK Stalin brought a bill to dispense with NEET. But the Governor sat over the bill for about a year, and thereafter it was forwarded to the President, and the President withheld the assent, against which the Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court challenging the withholding of granting of assent. NEET cannot be allowed." he told.

Congress MP KC Venugopal on Thursday attacked Union Minister Kiren Rijiju for allegedly providing misleading statements.

"Whatever the Parliamentary Affairs Minister is saying is a completely misleading statement. From day one, the entire nation – students, families, and citizens – have been all demanding the resignation of the Education Minister, who is totally responsible for the entire crisis. Let the Prime Minister sack him from the Ministry. Let us have a discussion with an open mind regarding the future. The government is not ready to do all these things," he told ANI.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday said that the government is committed to securing the future of the youth and that PM Modi's assurance to set up fast-track courts is a testament to the commitment.

"Prime Minister Modi has given directions for the establishment of fast-track courts because the government is committed to the future of the youth. Rahul Gandhi does not want to discuss in Parliament. He sat on a dharna without informing anyone. They engage in irresponsible politics. We are all committed to the youth," he told ANI.

The Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, slammed the Narendra Modi-led NDA government for not holding any discussion over the ongoing student protest fiasco.

Speaking to ANI, Kharge said that the government never wanted to discuss the issue in Parliament.

"If they were ready for a discussion, it would have started on the first day we had demanded it. Why were they not ready? Later, you lathi-charged the students," Kharge said.

Minister Kiren Rijiju told the Lok Sabha that the Opposition can decide the date and duration of a discussion on the NEET paper leak issue in both Houses of Parliament.

Rijiju said the government was ready for a debate and left it to the Opposition to choose when the discussion should be held and how long it should last, urging members to allow Parliament to function.

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee protested outside Parliament against the 20 rebel MPs who have formed another group and expressed their interest in supporting the NDA.

He was suspended from Lok Sabha on Wednesday over his remarks about women MPs from the rebel camp.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement to set up fast-track courts for paper leak cases reflects the government's commitment to safeguarding the future of the country's youth.

In a post on X, Shah said the welfare of young people and their bright future remain the Modi government's "highest priority" and "firm resolve". He said the Prime Minister's decision to ensure swift hearings and stringent action against those involved in paper leak cases through fast-track courts demonstrates that commitment.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been adjourned till 2 pm as Opposition continued to demand Pradhan's resignation before NEET discussion.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a strong message, announcing that fast-track courts will be set up to ensure speedy justice in paper leak cases. He also made it clear that no one who attempts to play with the future of students will be spared.

You decide when to begin the discussion, but do not impose conditions. By attaching conditions, you are only making excuses, and everyone understands that you are trying to avoid the discussion.

The government is ready to discuss all paper leak incidents that have taken place across the country," Kiren Rijiju said in Lok Sabha.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resumed at 12 noon.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged Opposition parties not to impose conditions for a discussion on the NEET row, saying they should not play politics with the future of the youth.

"I appeal to the political parties not to put any conditions to derail the discussion. I want to tell them this is not the time to play politics but to take all necessary steps for the future of the youth of the country," he said, speaking to media outside Parliament.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday. The two Congress leaders were seen leaving the Speaker's office after the meeting.

No official details of the discussion were immediately disclosed.

BJP MP Sambit Patra criticised the Opposition for protesting during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, accusing the Congress of disrupting proceedings instead of participating in discussions on the issue of question paper leaks.

Addressing the media, Patra said there was broad agreement that Parliament should hold a comprehensive discussion on question paper leaks. He called for the enactment of strong laws to deal with the recurring problem, saying stringent legislation was needed to prevent future leaks and address the hardships faced by candidates.

"One thing has emerged clearly, there should be a comprehensive discussion on the issue of question paper leaks. Strong laws should be enacted in Parliament so that the recurring problem of paper leaks and the hardships faced by candidates over the years can be effectively addressed," the BJP leader said.

Congress MPs Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and others joined the INDIA bloc protest at Makar Dwar inside the Parliament premises.
