Support women's quota, take credit: PM Modi's appeal to Opposition from Red Fort
Speaking from the ramparts of Delhi's iconic Red Fort, he called for support from 'all political parties' for an expedited rollout of the proposed reservation, saying they are free to even 'take credit' for the move.
In his address to the nation on the occasion of India's 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged opposition parties to support the swift implementation of the women's quota in Parliament and state assemblies.
Speaking from the ramparts of Delhi's iconic Red Fort, he called for support from "all political parties" for an expedited rollout of the proposed reservation, saying they are free to even "take credit" for the move.
While pointing to the passage of the women's reservation Bill in Parliament, PM Modi also underscored the role played by female representatives at every level of elected governance. He asserted that the long-proposed quota for mandatory female representation has always fallen prey to partisan politics.
"Today, women are playing a major role as elected representatives in panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations, providing capable leadership and solving local issues. Keeping this in mind, we passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in Parliament. However, for some reason or the other, this dream has always fallen prey to the political arena," PM Modi said.
He added, "Today, standing under the shadow of the Tricolour from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I appeal and pray to all political parties of the country: Come, become worshippers of the potential of women, step forward in respect of women, and as soon as possible."
'NEED OF THE HOUR'
Describing mandatory representation of women in legislatures as the "need of the hour," PM Modi said the move will pave the way for increased participation by them in policymaking.
"Ensure that our mothers and sisters get 33 percent representation in state assemblies and the Lok Sabha so that they can contribute to shaping India's policies; this is the need of the hour," he said, addressing political parties.
"And I once again urge all political parties – come, join in honouring women by implementing women's reservation; take the credit, take the glory, but give my mothers and sisters their rightful due," the PM added.
