A man has been arrested in Punjab's Pathankot for allegedly installing CCTV cameras along National Highway-44 and sharing live footage of Army and paramilitary movements with handlers based in Pakistan, police said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Baljit Singh alias Bitu, a resident of Chak Dhariwal village in Pathankot district, was arrested by the Crime Investigation Agency of Pathankot Police following a tip-off. According to police, the cameras were being used to monitor the movement of security forces on the strategically important highway connecting Punjab and Jammu. The live feed and surveillance inputs were allegedly being transmitted electronically to Pakistan-based handlers and other anti-national elements abroad.

Police said the operation posed a "serious threat" to national security.

Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police Daljinder Singh Dhillon said the accused was engaged in espionage activities for Pakistan and was passing on sensitive movement details from the highway stretch in Sujanpur. He added that the accused allegedly carried out the activities to fund his drug addiction.

The SSP said three more associates of the accused have also surfaced during the investigation and further disclosures are expected in the case.

An FIR has been registered under Sections 61, 111, 113(3) and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Official Secrets Act.
